The Glass Managerie by Tennessee Williams is centers around the main character, Tom. Tom refuses to cooperate with his mothers wishes to stay home. Since her husband abandoned the family she seems to have a loneliness complex. Although Tom is genuinely not trying to avoid the family deep down inside he feels a void that he needs to fill. Only by attending movie houses at night religiously. One might wonder why such a young man would abandon his family to attend these movie houses.

Exile in Literature is the abandonment of a person, place, or thing in a particular text. The abandonment can be either a result of your environment or self induced. Tom of course had a self induced loneliness yet he blames it in Amanda, his mother. Tom also has a sister,

The Glass Managerie by Tennessee Williams is centered around the main character Tom whose exile is self induced. He has a yearning to get away from his mother. He of course has no father due to the paternal abandonment. His escape is movie houses at midnight. These houses harbor sexual encounters at night. This of course is not a theme specified by Tennessee Williams but in the time of novel, early 1930’s, these movie houses were notorious for the sex havens. This of course is the reason why that is somewhat visible of why he would like to Abandon his home. One might also conclude that he, Tom, may have identity issues since he doesn’t have a father. Whatever the reason is he does indeed isolate himself.
